Acknowledged as
'York's premier amateur theatre company', York Settlement Community Players
(YSCP) is a thriving drama society. We have more than 200 contacts, Members,
Friends & Supporters and a history dating back to 1922. In the 1950s, the
prestige of the company was such that it attracted the membership of local
schoolgirl, Judi Dench, and her family.
Where
do we perform?
Since December 2000,
we've been performing at Friargate Theatre in York, home to the acclaimed
Riding Lights Theatre Company and The Studio Theatre at York Theatre Royal.
What sort of plays do we put on?
YSCP mainly produces three plays a year.
The play list includes, Relative Values, Ten Times Table, Translations, The
Good Person of Szechwan, The Memory of Water, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Laughing
Matter, Liaisons Dangereuses and The York Realist, which opened at
Friargate Theatre and then successfully transferred to the Studio Theatre, York
Theatre Royal. Our most recent production at the Studio was Amy's View
by David Hare, a review of which can be found at www.yorkpress.co.uk
YSCP Members
have also acted with professional theatre director, Richard Digby Day,
in his production of The Last Judgement. These acclaimed
performances were part of the York Mystery Plays in 2002
& 2006. Alongside our theatre productions, we continue to hold a very
popular charity fund-raising event each Christmas for York Against
Cancer.
What else do we do?
Other activities for members include drama
workshops, participation in student film productions and a prestigious
collaboration with York St John University called C4C (Collaborating for Creativity). YSCP Members are also often invited to audition for other
local amateur drama groups or Murder Mystery
Weekends.
An exciting recent development has seen us working in partnership with
writers from the York branch of Script Yorkshire.
